Pied beauties are returning to nest,
in their caves of mud beneath the eaves.
Swooping and rising, my spirit lifts with them.
Cheeky white faces poke out the hole,
burbling like underwater laughter.
Contagious merriment, I can’t help but smile.
Gliding high above unfurling leaves,
eating their fill of flies on the wing.
They’re a welcome sign, summer’s not far away.
